About Jakarasi
Palm baskets
Our traditional Palm baskets have been handmade by the Jobe family for several generations in Mariama Kunda, Gambia.
Father and son produce in their own yard - their baskets are woven from the branches of the palm tree. The sturdy baskets are untreated and not varnished.
About Jakarasi
I have known these woven baskets since my childhood. In West Africa they have many functions: Keeping the dowry for the wedding, to store fruits, bread and other food and much more. Through these baskets, I bring a part of my country to Berlin and keep in touch with my family ands friends. in The Gambia.
Seagrass baskets
The baskets are handmade, unique pieces, produced in the Senegalese tradition. The plastic fibres used for weaving are production leftovers that are reused.
Traditionally, the baskets were given as gifts at weddings, as they are very suitable for storing various things and are also very decorative.
Processing
sustainable
The processing is sustainable. The palm branches fall to the ground during palm wine production and are then collected and used for the baskets. Seagrass is fast growing and is known as a plant that stores a lot of CO2. The recycled plastic fibres are the waste product of a nearby carpet factory. They are collected and used for weaving. We use used cardboard boxes from our neighbourhood as packaging material.
fair
We buy our baskets directly from the producers and can thus respond to individual price expectations and strengthen regional production by bypassing the middlemen. For transport, we book containers that travel back to Europe empty.
